How to Uninstall Windows Live Writer

Great tool, but lousy—like all members of the Windows Live family—in terms of installing and uninstalling. Shame really.

Anyway, here’s how to uninstall Windows Live Writer if you need to. Maybe there’s an easier way but I couldn’t find it, either in the Start menu or the Add/Remove Programs folder in XP.

Dig down in your folders to the folder C:\Program Files\Windows Live\ . In there should be a program called wlarp.exe.

Launch it.

You’ll be offered two choices: Uninstall or Repair.

Clicking on uninstall will throw up a list of Live programs you’ve got installed already:

Select the one(s) you want to remove and off you go.

All pretty straightforward, once you’ve found the uinstaller.

(Sadly uninstalling and reinstalling didn’t fix my problem, but that’s another story.)

Have tried to find program “wlarp.exe” to uninstall live writer. The only similar programs available in my XP are “windows installer MSIServer c/windows/system32/msi” +
“MSMSGS ADMIN-58EODF”. Uninstalling via folder add/remove does not work. Using “control appwiz.cpl” as suggested by windows does not work either. Have you another idea?
    Thanks

Jose, sorry, I don’t. I’m surprised that wlarp.exe isn’t there. It could be that you installed an earlier version of WLW before it was bundled with the Windows Live gang. One option may be to download the Live installer, which may possibly remove earlier versions of WLW. Then you can remove the Live stuff in the way I describe above.

I’m having the same problem – I tried to uninstall Windows Live Essential but can’t – i think my wlarp.exe is corrupt as nothing comes up when i click the file. BUT i can’t find the file anywhere!! I tried asking my friend to copy hers and send it to me, but her msn is of different version.arrghh

Yo solucioné el problema con una herramienta de Windows bajada de la página de Mocrosoft, se llama windows installer clean up. (Antes de usarla lean las instrucciones): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

:( Will uninstalling delete my blog user name and password if someone re-installs it?

I can’t log out, sing out, or delete, and I tried lying, but since it doesn’t go through it doesn’t save any settings.

    HELP! :’( *tear*

Thanks for the tip. I just uninstalled it from Windows 7 CR. The wlarp.exe was in another folder. Here’s the path: C:/Program Files/WindowsLive/Installer. It uninstalled Windows Live Writer and gave me the option to uninstall other Windows Live programs. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for that tip. I needed to uninstall from an old laptop so someone else could use it. You were right about it being difficult to find. The path I took was the same as Collin. The program showed up as wlarp, without the exe, next to a windows logo.

I found the file folder named in the instructions, but it wouldn’t launch the program. What do I do?

Also, you say uninstalling and reinstalling did not solve your problem? What did? (My problem is that Windows Live Writer will come up momentarily, but before the window loads, it collapses. I have the same problem with IE.)

    Thanks.

Thank you for this! I’m wondering why it doesn’t show in programs…… most people wouldn’t think to dig down like that to uninstall it. This came in handy. :)

    If wlarp.exe doesn’t do anything, check C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\WLSetup\Logs for a log file explaining why.

Hey, is there any way how to install windows live writer without upgrading msn to version 9? It took me 2 and half hours to figure out how to downgrade back to 8.5…

Really enjoyed writer tho so would love to have it, but seriously dont want to upgrade the messenger.

Anyway if there is not any chance how to install writer separately, does exist any other similar program for easy blogging?

    Thanks in advance

For Uninstalling Windows Live sub products ie Live writer etc
    use Revo Uninstaller.

i deleted the files directly from the hard drive, and then went back to control panel and then remove the empty reserve name from the list, and that was all. it gives warning that some programs may not work after deleting, but it refers to its own applications the rest of your OS should be fine.
