(There are other ways of doing this. But this is probably the easiest.)
In Google Reader click on the Settings tab:
Click on the Goodies link:
Scroll down to Subscribe as you surf:
Right click on the Subscribe.. link in orange:
and select Add to Favorites…
If you’re confronted with a Security Alert, click Yes:
You should now have a new bookmark in your Favorites list called Subscribe:
Next time you’re on a web page or blog you like, look around for an icon that looks a bit like this:
sometimes it will look like this:
or anything that mentions RSS, or XML, or Subscribe to this feed. Even if you can’t find something like that, and you want to monitor the website, click on your new Subscribe.. link in your Favorites list.
Chances are the website has an RSS feed. If it does, Google Reader will grab it and return you to Google Reader’s main reader, with the message:
(If you’re not signed in to Google, then you’ll see this message:)
Below it you’ll see the most recent posts from that website’s RSS feed:
If you do want to subscribe to the feed, click on the Subscribe button:
and Google Reader will add to your collection of feeds, and return you to the page you were viewing before.
Next time you go to Google Reader, you’ll see the feed has been added to the left hand pane, at the bottom:
Click on that, and you’ll see a list of the most recent posts from that website or blog:
That’s it.
As you gather feeds, you may want to organize them via folders or labels. To do this click on the Manage Subscriptions link at the bottom of the left hand pane:
It will take you to a page listing all your subscriptions. Here you can unsubscribe to feeds, rename them to something shorter or more memorable, change the folders they sit in, etc. Experiment.
